Emissions failed

I have a 1993 2 wheel drive toyota pickup with 22RE that I bought from a co-worker. It had no power, excellent compression, 260,000 miles. In his trying to trouble shoot it, he'd messed with numerous items including the TPS. I've troubleshot it to the TPS adjustment. I got it to run OK, but it still will not pass emissions. The Emisions test for the HC (PPM) should be at 220 maximum when idling. It's at 437. Could this be the TPS, some other emission components or could he have inadvertently adjusted something else?

I don't think TPS is the culprit of the high HC reading. High HC reading can come from two sources:

- Bad oxygen (lambda) sensor

- Your catalytic converter is toast (which given the age of the car is probably the case).

You need to take it to a mechanic who can check the oxygen sensor, and if it is working OK, you will probably need a new catalytic converter.
