timing issue or something else

I just bought a 91 4x4 22re it runs with a miss and pretty noisy around the valve cover and will completely foul the #4 spark plug out pretty quick, i bought the truck thinking it was a ring issue but i'm not sure cause when i checked the timing with the jumper wire in it was no where near 5* so i moved the distributor and had to turn it as far as i could to get it to 5* and when it got there it quitened up the valve train but it bogged really bad and would barely idle and had to give it gas to get it started, so i moved it back to where it was and quite. so what do you guys think could be the problem here?

"Foul out" does not tell us if the plug is fouled due to carbon buildup or oil buildup or some other kind of deposit. Ignition timing, valve clearance and other engine tune up procedures are explained in detail in this Toyota pickup idiot book: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17506795/Toy...Idiot_Book.pdf

The book also explains how to do an engine compression test. Compression of cyl#4 should be much lower than the other cylinders if it has a valve or ring problem.

It looked like carbon build up cause it was really black and I just got the truck today so I have not done much to it yet and there was a little bit of oil on the spark plug thtreads but I'm not sure why it does what it does while trying to set timing
