Since I'm on this great site for my XB, Matrix, and Rav4 questions tonight, I'll lay down my Highlander (actually it's a 2005 RX350) question.
It's started leaking from the boot one drop a day out of the steering rack. Does the whole darn thing need to be replaced? Is it a do it yourselfer for a moderate mechanic like myself? Or take it in? What does it run$$??
Thanks a bunch

Bad rack seal. It won't get any better. Eventually wil leak a lot and will require rack replacement. Moderate (4 to 6 hrs) effort on a Highlander. Don't know RX setup. Check for local rack rebuilders who supply garages. Often $150 or so with exchange. Rockauto is probably $350. Lexus $1000+ for rack alone

Does the Highlander need any special tools to change out?

No, but have you replaced the fluid and maybe tried some Lucas steering additive...maybe the seals have gotten dirty, and maybe a flush and additive would help
